The Writers Block Solution

So - what color is  YOUR car?

Colors not only mean things, but they have an emotional charge.

Wearing red or yellow on a bleak day will brighten the mood, black can either be dramatic or depressing.  Blue can be soothing, but turquoise is a different matter.  Each color and shade has an impact depending on weather, situation or character.

Everyone has a different idea of which color is their favorite, which one they wear, which one they put around the house or paint the walls.  It even determines the car one buys.

For example, when I was looking for a new car, I found several that were nice and serviceable and would have done the job.  But the moment I saw my little Scion xA in Absolutely Red, I fell madly in love.  Even worse, it was a limited edition and hard to find and I spent two weeks tracking one down.

In fact, my cars have almost always been red and I don't think I could stand having a car of another color, because to me anything else would be boring.  While I'd never have that color in the bedroom or the kitchen - it's just perfect on the cute little car I drive.

So this week, consider the car your character drives and WRITE the answers to these questions.  (If she doesn't drive, consider what she WOULD drive if she did.)

What color would it be?

How does it make her feel when she drives it?

How would she feel if it was another color?

Would she buy another car that wasn't perfect, but was the right color?

Have her cars always been that color?

Why that color?

Does she have an early memory of a car of that color?

Maybe a favorite grandfather had a cute red sports car and that meant something special to your character.

Maybe she always drives a flaming red car because it reflects an inner life that few people know about.

Maybe she always drives a white car because it's one of the safest colors at night.

Do this for each of your characters.

How could you use this in your story?
