The Writers Block Solution

Newsletter

The last thing you probably need is even more to read.  Besides, reading isn't writing.  So we aren't going to do a traditional newsletter or innundate you with a ton of stuff you have to wade through.

Since our mission is to get you started and keep your nose to the keyboard, you'll get a writing starter so you have something to play with during the week.  You'll also get any good suggestions we come up with that aren't already in the Writers Block Solution Manual and on occasion we may recommend a particularly useful book.

That's it.  No fluff.  No bedtime reading.  Just a kick in the butt to get you writing.

The Writers Block Solution
Your Bi-Weekly Kick in the Muse

Written and published by Kieran McKendrick

=============================================================

Weather to write about:

   Thunderclouds are suddenly rolling in

Describe what it looks like and how the weather will affect your character's day.

=============================================================
Quick writing warmup  =============================================================

Write a paragraph or two (10 minutes minimum) using these
elements:

A feral kitten, a meandering creek, and an old orange crate

(Just write down what shows up.  Have fun.  Be outrageous!)

Scenario

Consider that today is July 13 AND it's a Friday.  Now some
people believe that Friday the 13th is bad luck and some
think it's a good luck day.

=============================================================
Questions

WRITE the answers to these questions.

If you can't think of an answer right away, just start by
writing, "Right now [character name] is looking at the
calendar and thinking ...."

Fill in the blanks and then just keep going with whatever
pops in your head, even if you think it's dreck - because
no one will ever see it and, besides, this is just a
brainstorming session and IT DOESN'T COUNT!  And later, if
you feel like it, you can fix it.  Or you can just rip up
everything you've written and burn it as an offering to the
Writing Muse as a humble apology for your hubris in
attempting to be a writer.  It's up to you, but that comes
later.  Right now you're just noodling.

=============================================================

How does your character feel about Friday the 13th?

Does she do anything differently today than she would have if it hadn't been Friday the 13th?

Describe her actions as if you're writing a silent movie so
that the reader will know what she's thinking or feeling
without being told.

How could you use this in your story?

Do this for each of your characters

=============================================================

Best quote for writers:

"Hold fast to dreams, for if dreams die, life is a broken  winged bird that cannot fly."

                           -- Langston Hughes

If you dream of being a writer, don't let that dream die. No one can tell the story you can.  Don't let your stories  die untold.
